2025

DECEMBER 2025: Congratulations to Dr. Emma Goodman for the successful defense of her PhD thesis, “Fast and Fur-ious: Engineering next-generation canine CARs”! Following up from a first-in-canine CAR T cell clinical trial that demonstrated partial biologic activity but no clinical remissions, Emma used a comparative immunology approach to investigate canine T cell signaling pathways activated after CAR engagement and to engineer a next-generation CAR T cell to advance to canine clinical trials.

NOVEMBER 2025: Congratulations to Chuda for her review published in Journal of Investigative Dermatology comparing trial design and endpoints across B cell-mediated autoimmune diseases to identify key issues affecting clinical outcomes

OCTOBER 2025: Congratulations to Burcin and Gexin for their work published in Kidney International on developing phospholipase A2 receptor CAAR T cells for the treatment of membranous nephropathy, in collaboration with colleagues from Penn and Cabaletta Bio. Their work was featured in a journal commentary.

APRIL 2025: The Payne lab welcomes Farzan Solimani, MD! Farzan previously trained as a dermatology physician-scientist with Michael Hertl in Marburg, where he helped to validate antigen-specific T- and B-cell assays that informed the development of our DSG3-CAART correlatives. We are thrilled to recruit him to Columbia to continue his work on antigen-specific immunotherapies.

APRIL 2025: The Payne lab is thrilled to join the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub NY to engineer immune cells for the treatment of human disease. Aimee joined the spring symposium with new colleagues Sjoukje van der Stegen, PhD and Susan Rosenthal

FEBRUARY 2025: Congratulations to Sangwook for his paper describing the engineering of AChR CAAR T cells for myasthenia gravis, published in Science Advances

FEBRUARY 2025: Aimee was honored to present CAR T cells for autommunity as Science magazine’s 2024 runner-up for Breakthrough of the Year alongside Monalisa Ghosh and Jeffrey Dunn at the AAAS meeting in Boston

FEBRUARY 2025: The Payne lab welcomes Chuda Rujitharanawong, MD, an expert in immune-mediated dermatologic diseases from Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand for a one year clinical research fellowship
